Gallus Life Is Bliss Review: Glasgow Five-Piece Deliver Their Boldest Album Yet

When a city changes around you faster than you can process, how do you hold onto your sense of self? For Glasgow indie-punk firebrands Gallus, the answer isn’t found in quiet reflection; it is channelled into twelve tracks of razor-sharp lyricism, cathartic energy, and unapologetic grit. Arriving via Marshall Records, Gallus’ second album, Life Is Bliss, is an ambitious, fully realised record that cements the five-piece as one of the most vital alternative acts operating today.

Produced and mixed by Blair Crichton of Dead Pony, Life Is Bliss arrives on Friday, 25 September, following a prolific run of singles that included the chaotic self-destruction of ‘Sick Bastards’ and the reflective, civic-minded ‘MK Des’. The record also drops on the heels of the band’s viral cover of The Proclaimers’ ‘Letter From America’, which surpassed 128,000 views in under two months, and a memorable invitation to meet the Scotland national football team ahead of their World Cup campaign. But with Life Is Bliss, the focus shifts firmly back to the band’s own uncompromising vision.

Finding Stability in a Changing City

Taking its name from a striking lyric on album track ‘Donnie Murdo’—“Eyes are burning, life is bliss”—the record centres around the search for serenity while everything once relied upon appears to be unravelling. Across twelve songs, Gallus explore cultural decline, civic vandalism, friendship, self-sabotage, and that universal, nagging feeling that life should somehow be moving faster than it is.

Speaking about the creative process behind the record, the band shared: “A lot of this record is about trying to find stability when the things you care about seem to be changing around you. Some of it comes from watching Glasgow transform, some of it comes from getting older and some of it comes from feeling like life isn’t moving forward in the way you’d hoped. It’s probably the most honest representation of who we are as a band right now.”

That honesty bleeds into every corner of the tracklist. Opener ‘Au Contraire’ sets a breathless pace, leading into highlights like ‘Alert Alert’, which rails against bureaucratic inertia, and ‘Something There’, which searches for faint glimmers of progress amid urban stagnation. The album’s artwork cleverly mirrors these themes, featuring a well-known tree in Glasgow’s Finnieston district that has remained a steadfast constant amid years of aggressive redevelopment and gentrification.

A Natural Evolution for Modern Punk

Comprising Barry Dolan on vocals, guitarists Eamon Ewins and Gianluca Bernacchi, bassist Matt McGoldrick, and drummer Paul Ewins, Gallus have spent years carving out a reputation for electrifying live performances. Following their 2023 debut, We Don’t Like The People We Become, and last year’s Cool To Drive EP, Life Is Bliss feels like a massive step forward.

Critics have often drawn comparisons between Gallus and peers like Yard Act, Sports Team, and Fontaines D.C., and it is easy to see why. They share an ability to marry sharp, observational wit with crushing post-punk dynamics. Yet, Life Is Bliss belongs entirely to Glasgow. It balances humour, frustration, and deep-seated vulnerability in equal measure, proving that the band’s focus on self-deprecation and live catharsis is more potent than ever.

With Life Is Bliss finally out in the world, Gallus are wasting no time bringing these new tracks to grassroots venues across the UK. The campaign kicks off with an extensive series of intimate instore performances and signings before rolling into their biggest headline tour to date.

The live run opens with a landmark hometown headline show at Glasgow’s Art School on 2 October, before hitting cities across England and Scotland through mid-October.
