Dreams On Toast Review – The Darkness Are Back and Madder Than Ever

The Darkness logo

The Greatest Rock Album Ever? Probably.

The Darkness have done it again. If you thought Permission to Land was their peak, think again—“Dreams On Toast” is here to melt faces, burst eardrums, and leave you questioning whether you should start wearing tighter trousers. It’s a perfect mix of outrageous riffs, sky-high vocals, and lyrical lunacy—and somehow, it all works.

Dreams On Toast Review

Track by Track: The Madness Unleashed

1. Rock and Roll Party Cowboy

This one kicks off with a killer riff so good it should come with a warning label. It’s got everything—swagger, attitude, and the kind of rock ‘n’ roll energy that makes you want to kick down a saloon door. If this song were a person, it’d be the guy at the bar who’s already had five whiskeys and is about to buy you one too.

2. I Hate Myself

This is good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll, not some emo sob-fest. Even Ginger Wildheart loves it, so you know it’s the real deal. The video, however, is a bit strange—but when has The Darkness ever played it safe?

3. Hot On My Tail

Opens with Queen-like harmonies before taking a sharp left turn into “my dog died” country ballad territory. And somehow, it’s still absolutely brilliant. It’s got twang, soul, and enough drama to make you consider buying a cowboy hat.

4. Mortal Dread

The opening riff? Straight out of the AC/DC playbook. The chorus? A singalong anthem that demands to be belted out at full volume. This one is built for beer-soaked festival fields and massive arenas.

5. Don’t Need Sunshine

A beautiful, simple, and perfect power ballad and my favorite song. Sometimes, less is more—and this track proves it. Play it while staring dramatically out of a rainy window.

6. The Longest Kiss

This sounds like it was written in the ’70s—think Electric Light Orchestra meets The Darkness, with Justin’s soaring vocals layered over lush instrumentation. You can practically hear the flared trousers swishing.

7. The Battle For Gadget Land

A reflection of the tech-obsessed world we live in, but instead of being a boring lecture, it’s a full-blown, over-the-top rock opera. There are synths, blazing guitars, and lyrics that make you wonder if your toaster is planning a revolution.

8. Cold Hearted Woman

Yep, we’re back in country mode again—and guess what? It still works. A whiskey-soaked, heartache-infused rock ‘n’ roll banger that’ll have you two-stepping before you even realize what’s happening.

9. Walking Through Fire

This could’ve been a leftover from “Permission to Land”—it’s that classic Darkness sound. If you’ve seen them live recently, you already know the signature march that goes with this one. If not, you’ll figure it out by the first chorus.

10. Weekend In Rome

A beautiful ballad that paints a cinematic picture. It’s romantic, emotional, and utterly epic—the perfect way to close the album. If this doesn’t make you dream of a reckless Italian adventure, you might be dead inside.

Final Verdict: The Darkness Deliver Another Rock ‘N’ Roll Masterpiece

“Dreams On Toast” is everything you’d want from The Darkness—huge riffs, massive choruses, and a total disregard for playing by the rules. It’s the sound of a band having the time of their lives, and it’s impossible not to get swept up in the madness.

Should you buy it?
Yes. Maybe even steal it if you have to. (Kidding. Sort of.)

Is it the best album of the year?
Absolutely. Nothing else even comes close.

Rating: 11/10. Because The Darkness don’t do normal numbers.

Is this best Dreams On Toast Review Ever?
Definitely.

Samantha Fish announces new album with Jesse Dayton ahead of October UK Tour.
