New Music – Tom Moriarty “She’s Like The River”

Tom Moriarty New Single: A Soulful Return with “She’s Like the River”

There is a rare kind of weight behind the voice of Tom Moriarty—a gravelly, soulful resonance that feels earned rather than practiced. After a hiatus marked by personal trials, physical recovery, and industry-wide delays, the Cheltenham-based singer-songwriter finally returns with the Tom Moriarty new single, “She’s Like the River.” Released as the lead track from his highly anticipated fifth album, Chapters (due May 2026), this song proves that Moriarty hasn’t just returned; he has evolved into one of the UK’s most authentic folk-rock voices.

The Evolution of the Tom Moriarty New Single

The track opens with a delicate tapestry of acoustic guitar and piano, subtly colored by the mandola—a thoughtful nod to Moriarty’s Irish heritage. It’s a grounded, earthy introduction that sets a contemplative stage for his powerhouse vocals. When he sings, “When I’m tired and I’m broken I go to the water’s edge,” there is an undeniable sense of truth. While there are echoes of Eddie Vedder’s raw power and Ray LaMontagne’s folk-soul sensitivity, the Tom Moriarty new single occupies a singular space, delivering a performance that feels both intimate and cinematic.

The production, handled by Tristan Longworth, is world-class, benefiting from a “slow-cooked” approach. Originally recorded in 2019, the tracks for Chapters were shelved due to a series of unfortunate events, including a career-threatening hand injury and the global pandemic. This passage of time seems to have only added to the song’s gravity. The rhythm section features the steady, tasteful hand of Evan Jenkins (Eric Clapton, Van Morrison), while Georgie Leach’s strings provide a transcendental swell that lifts the chorus.

A highlight is the inclusion of sisters Louise and Melanie Marshall on backing vocals. Louise, a staple of Jools Holland’s band, and Melanie, a jazz powerhouse, provide a gospel-tinged call-and-response that gives the track a communal, “instant classic” feel. Their presence isn’t just a happy accident; Moriarty had been chasing that specific “Gossip in the Grain” vocal warmth for years, and here, it acts as the perfect foil to his rugged lead.

What makes the Tom Moriarty new single truly stand out, however, is its lyrical restraint. Moriarty describes the river as a place of healing and solace, and by comparing a partner to that water, he offers what he calls “the highest compliment.” Much like George Harrison’s “Something,” the song conveys profound, bone-deep devotion without ever actually uttering the word “love.” It is a song about finding peace in another person—a sanctuary amidst the noise of a difficult few years.

After enduring setbacks that would have sidelined a lesser artist, “She’s Like the River” feels like a release in every sense of the word. It is a triumphant, heartfelt return that sets a high bar for the Chapters era. The Tom Moriarty new single is proof that he has been through the fire and returned with the best work of his career.
