Instigators Storm Back: Punk Legends Return at Rebellion 2025 with Phoenix and Shockgun Reissues
After three decades of silence, UK anarcho-punk pioneers Instigators are set to ignite Blackpool’s Rebellion Festival on August 8, 2025, marking their first live performance since 1990. This electrifying comeback, paired with the August 1 release of limited-edition colored vinyl reissues of their seminal albums Phoenix (1986) and Shockgun (1988) via Boss Tuneage Retro Series, is a rallying cry for punk fans old and new. With a legacy of relentless DIY touring and a sound that inspired a generation, Instigators are ready to reclaim their throne as one of the 1980s’ hardest-working bands. Here’s why their return is the punk event of 2025.
The Instigators’ Legacy: A DIY Punk Revolution
Formed in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, in the early 1980s, Instigators were a cornerstone of the UK anarcho-punk scene, known for their raw energy and uncompromising ethos. Their debut EP, The Blood Is on Your Hands (1984), and first LP, Nobody Listens Anymore (1985), released via Subhumans’ Bluurg Records, earned them a cover feature in Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll and a spot on Pushead’s iconic Cleanse the Bacteria compilation. After a lineup shakeup in 1985, founder-guitarist Simon Mooney rebuilt the band with vocalist Andy “Tez” Turner (ex-Xpozez), bassist Andy “Trimble” Turnbull, and drummer Steve “Cuzzy” Curran, kicking off a new era with their debut show in Swansea, July 1985.
This lineup became a juggernaut, touring relentlessly across the UK, Europe, and the US on self-booked, zero-budget treks. From 1986 to 1990, they clocked over 16 European tours and a landmark 1986 US tour, playing alongside The Adolescents and Murphy’s Law from Rhode Island to San Francisco. “You’d have struggled to find a harder-working group,” writes All About The Rock. Their DIY spirit inspired countless bands, paving the way for the UK punk underground’s global influence.
Phoenix and Shockgun: Restored Punk Classics
On August 1, 2025, Boss Tuneage reissues Phoenix (1986) and Shockgun (1988) on limited-edition colored vinyl, the first vinyl pressings in over a decade for Phoenix and the first colored vinyl for Shockgun since its initial German release. Mastered by Andy Pearce, these deluxe editions feature restored artwork, 24×12 card inserts, and heavyweight sleeves, making them must-haves for fans and newcomers. Pre-orders are live at bosstuneagerecords.bandcamp.com.
Phoenix, recorded at Woodlands Studio in Castleford with Subhumans’ Bruce Treasure, marked a shift toward a North American-influenced sound, blending anarcho-punk urgency with melodic heft. Tracks like “Blind Eye” and “Hedonism” captured their raw intensity. Shockgun, with Bob Gorlik replacing Turnbull on bass, upped the ante with a polished edge, backed by extensive tours across the UK, Germany, and the US. Both albums, long out of print, are hailed by Vive Le Rock as “classic” cornerstones of 1980s punk.
Rebellion Festival 2025: A Historic Return
Instigators’ headline slot at Rebellion Festival on August 8, 2025, at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens is a pinnacle moment. Now in its 30th year, Rebellion is the world’s largest independent punk festival, hosting over 300 bands across eight stages. With Friday and Saturday day tickets sold out and weekend passes (£225 + £5 fee) dwindling, fans are urged to grab tickets via rebellionfestivals.com. The band—featuring Turner (vocals), Mooney (guitar), Gary Jackson (bass), and Dan Le-Billon (drums)—will deliver their blistering set, likely including Phoenix and Shockgun staples.
The festival, praised by Louder Than War for its “thriving scene that will never die,” is the perfect stage for Instigators’ return. Posts on X, like @allabouttherock’s teaser, buzz with excitement, calling it a “momentous occasion” for punk fans. Additional shows include Huddersfield’s Parish (August 15), London’s Camden Underworld (August 16), and Poland’s Bialystok Borderline Festival (August 23), all confirmed via vivelerock.net.
Instigators weren’t just a band—they were a movement. Their grueling tours and raw, socially charged anthems defined the anarcho-punk ethos, influencing bands from Crass to Conflict. All About The Rock notes their role in inspiring “a new generation of young British bands to blaze their own trails.” After bowing out in Milan in 1990, their 2025 return is a rare chance to witness a pivotal piece of punk history. As IPAmusic puts it, “If you never saw them in full flow back in the day, it’s time to see what you were missing.”
