What is Ayron Jones’s new album Excuse Me about?

Excuse Me is described as loud, visceral and assertive, with Jones blending grunge, hard rock, metal, blues, punk, soul, R&B and hip-hop into a sound that is unmistakably his own. It was recorded in Nashville with Marti Frederiksen, a longtime collaborator whose credits include Aerosmith and Ozzy Osbourne, and it is raw, immediate and full volume. After three years away, Jones steps away from industry expectations and leans fully into his grunge and metal DNA.

The record is built from heavy guitar, angsty lyrics and the soulful, swaggering vocals that have become his signature, and it is packed with working-class anthems that reflect Jones’s own journey through tough times while confronting the pressure, anger and uncertainty of the world around him. Lyrically it deals with powder-keg tension, economic pressure, uncertainty, anger and isolation, and the sound digs deeper into the Seattle scene of his upbringing, with influences as wide as Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Michael Jackson, Prince and OutKast. Real drums, drop-tuned guitars and melancholy melodies sit at the centre of it all.

Jones sums up the thinking behind the album in his own words. “Excuse Me is the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to music,” he says. “At its heart, it’s about the human experience – life, death, love, loss, and finding peace in the acceptance of our own mortality.” He adds that it is a record for people who feel frustrated and scared but are still holding on to hope: “I wanted to make a record that speaks to that connection, that reminds us even in our darkest moments, hope is never truly lost.”

What is on the Excuse Me tracklist?

Excuse Me has ten tracks, and “Glad You Came” sits in the number two spot. The full tracklist is:

  1. “Strike Of A Match”
  2. “Glad You Came”
  3. “Hollywood”
  4. “What You Need”
  5. “A La Prochaine”
  6. “Fate”
  7. “Freedom”
  8. “When My Day Comes”
  9. “Coming Of A New Age”
  10. “Hang On”

It is a bold, compact running order that moves from the opening spark of “Strike Of A Match” to the closing statement of “Hang On”, and the title Excuse Me gives you a good idea of the attitude. Jones says the album is where every part of his artistry comes together: “I’m a guitarist, but I’m also a singer, songwriter and composer. This is the record where every part of my artistry comes together. The songwriting, the singing, the guitar playing, all of it.”

What is Glad You Came about?

“Glad You Came” is a searching examination of toxic relationships, personal accountability and forgiveness. Jones says it is about “those intense connections that pull us in, sometimes for reasons we don’t fully understand,” and describes a dark, seductive edge rooted in the Seattle sound he grew up with. “Not every connection is meant to last, but there’s beauty in the experience,” he explains, adding that you can look back with a smile and say, “I’m glad you came.”

He also turns the lens on himself. “It’s easy to point the finger and blame others for situations,” he says. “We chase after relationships or people because we’re trying to heal ourselves. We’re searching for an answer that lives outside ourselves. But at the end of the day, it’s all about you.” Add it all up and the single is a fitting introduction to an album that is as much about self-examination as it is about volume.

Who is Ayron Jones?

Ayron Jones broke out during the pandemic and became the first Black solo artist to have a Number One single on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. He also won Best New Rock Artist at the 2022 iHeartRadio Music Awards, and his supporters have included B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Guns N’ Roses, Public Enemy, Shinedown, Daughtry, Koe Wetzel and The Rolling Stones, who he performed with in Paris in front of 70,000 people.

UK audiences know him well, from headlining his own shows at London’s legendary 100 Club to opening for Black Stone Cherry. We were at his set at Download, and our Ayron Jones Download 2022 gig review picked out his cover of Nirvana’s “Breed”. His last album was Chronicles Of The Kid, which we called a musical masterpiece in our album review, and the band were on fine form when we caught them at the Camden Assembly in 2023.

Jones grew up in Seattle amid extraordinary instability, and music became an escape and then an obsession. After several years playing violin he picked up the guitar at 13 and largely taught himself to play, starting out as a blues purist alongside older blues musicians before realising that the rock and grunge sounds of his hometown were just as fundamental to who he is. Sir Mix-a-Lot helped launch his independent career, and he went on to connect with Screaming Trees’ Barrett Martin, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready and Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan.

Why does Excuse Me feel like a fresh start?

Jones says that at the height of his rapid ascent he increasingly felt he was playing the character of “rock star”, and he spent the following years questioning how much of that identity was really his. As a husband and father, he examined relationships, personal accountability and past mistakes, and the process of working out who he is when outside expectations fall away.

“I was becoming a character, but that character wasn’t truly based on me,” he says. “It was something the industry put together to help sell records. This is me.” That is why Excuse Me is being presented as a bold statement from an artist making an album in which he fully recognises himself, bringing together the many sides of a musician who has spent his career refusing to fit into a single world.

He also sees the album as a reflection of the times. “We have a lot of escape music right now,” Jones says. “It’s happy and distracting music, but the price of eggs and gas are skyrocketing and people are feeling pretty dismal. This record is a reflection of that.” For a rock fan after something heavier and more honest, that sounds like a promise worth keeping an eye on.
