Saxon Cancel 10 Summer Shows As Biff Byford Undergoes Emergency Surgery
In a blow to both fans and festival organisers, Saxon have announced the immediate cancellation of 10 summer shows across Europe as legendary frontman Biff Byford undergoes an emergency medical procedure.

The band broke the news earlier today, stating that Byford’s operation will require a six-week recovery period — leaving the heavy metal titans no choice but to withdraw from a slew of high-profile performances. The announcement affects some of the band’s most hotly anticipated appearances this summer, including festival sets at Wacken Open Air, Pol’And’Rock, Summer Breeze, and Öland Rock Festival.
“Saxon were so looking forward to performing at all the below summer festivals and events,” a spokesperson for the band’s management shared. “But the health and wellbeing of the band obviously has to come first.”
Fans were quick to express support on social media, many sending messages of encouragement to Byford and the rest of the band. While Saxon have assured fans that the cancellations are necessary, they also hinted at a hopeful return to the stage later this summer.
The Cancelled Dates
The cancellations affect shows throughout July and August, including both festival slots and intimate club dates:
- JUL 12 – Area 53 Festival, Leoben (Austria)
- JUL 24 – Lokomotivet, Eskilstuna (Sweden)
- JUL 25 – Öland Rock Festival, Borgholm (Sweden)
- JUL 26 – The Garden, Linköping (Sweden)
- JUL 27 – Furuvik, Gävle (Sweden)
- JUL 29 – Turbinenhalle 2, Oberhausen (Germany)
- JUL 31 – Pol’And’Rock Festival, Czaplinek (Poland)
- AUG 1 – Wacken Open Air, Wacken (Germany)
- AUG 9 – Stallörsparken, Ekenäs (Finland)
- AUG 16 – Summer Breeze Festival, Dinkelsbühl (Germany)
Ticket holders for the Swedish club dates are advised to request refunds through their original point of purchase.
Area 53 Festival has already confirmed that Saxon will now headline their 2026 edition, offering a silver lining for fans in Austria. Meanwhile, Saxon are actively working with promoters across the remaining events to explore the possibility of rescheduling — though as of now, no firm details have been confirmed.
The Show Goes On
Despite the disruption, all is not lost. Saxon have confirmed they will still perform at Rockharz Festival in Ballenstedt, Germany, on July 2nd, with Byford expected to take the stage before his procedure.
There’s also optimism around the band’s return later in the summer, with hopes pinned on confirmed performances at Trutnoff Open Air Festival in the Czech Republic on August 23rd, and Neuborn Open Air in Germany on August 29th.
The band remain committed to their upcoming tours of Spain, France, and the UK, scheduled for later this year. Dates for those runs remain unchanged.
“All in Saxon are gutted they will be unable to perform,” the spokesperson added, “but they look forward to hopefully being back on stage later this summer.”
For a band whose legacy spans over four decades, this is far from a final curtain. With classic anthems, die-hard fans, and a frontman known for defying the odds, Saxon aren’t slowing down — they’re simply biding their time before the next storm breaks.
