The Zac Schulze Gang Live Review

The Zac Schulze Gang Return to Norwich

It had been over a year since I last saw The Zac Schulze Gang – back in May 2024 supporting Eddie 9V in Brighton. Tonight they were the headline act. I was looking forward to it, and they did not disappoint!

Support Act: Greg Coulson Band

Support in Norwich came from the incredibly talented Greg Coulson and his band. They put on a brilliant show that really warmed the crowd up for the headline act. Coulson’s keyboard playing is out of this world and he has a voice to die for.

He is surrounded by a tight rhythm section of Joel Barford and John Thompson on drums and bass, and brilliant guitarist Mat Day. He also has an impressive musical heritage, having played with – among others – The Selecter, The Blockheads and Morcheeba.

His sound is all his own, though and is an infectious mix of soul, blues and rock with those keyboards front and centre – none more so than on 2018’s “Girls”, which really got the Waterfront crowd going.

The Zac Schulze Gang Take the Stage

The Zac Schulze Gang make a huge noise for a trio, and what a noise it is! Tonight was the last date of a short UK tour before they head off to Europe in a few days time.

They are out promoting brand new album “Straight To It” – their first full release after an EP and a live album in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

They stepped on to the stage to huge cheers and applause and they put on a superb show. Zac Schulze himself proved just what an incredible guitarist he is (and he’s still only 25!), and the rest of the band – Ant Greenwell on bass and Ben Schulze on drums – blew the audience away with their playing and energy.

They truly are a gang, and not simply a vehicle for Zac’s guitar playing.

Highlights from the Setlist

Their set was superb and showcased new tunes from “Straight To It” along with more established material, and finished with a superb cover of Peter Green’s “Oh Well”.

These three have the blues running through their veins. They play with passion, energy and authenticity. Zac wields his Strat like it’s a part of him, and Ant Greenwell’s vocals complement his to create a unique sound amongst the current slew of blues rock bands.

Final Thoughts

Those seeing them in Europe this month and next are in for a treat, and I can’t wait catch them at the Garage, London on 11th April next year!
