Yee Loi Debut Album Flicks, Licks, Party Tricks Announced After Denmark Street Set

Liverpool punk trio Yee Loi have announced their debut album, Flicks, licks, party tricks. Presale starts Tuesday 5 October on Townsend.

They marked it with a packed basement set at Yungblud’s Denmark Street store in Soho — Rose on guitar and backing vocals, Matilda on drums and vocals, Don Don on bass. Recent single “Social Suicide” sat next to “Down In The Bunker”, plus older cuts “Why Ask Why” and “Mystery Train”, and two unheard album tracks, “Miraclist” and “Picture Perfect”. Kerrang!, MTV UK and Northern Exposure have already had the singles on song-of-the-week lists.

Flicks, licks, party tricks

The record is Ramones-informed UK punk with their own melodic DIY stamp. Matilda said the title is the joy of playing this fast: go crazy on stage and drag the room with you. She also wanted her own lyrics and melodies out, not another set of covers. Rose is proud the guitar is hers, influences and all, and that the songs make the case that young girls can play this stuff as hard as anyone. Don Don, usually the quiet one, put it flatter: he is done with lightweight, backing-tracked songs passing for punk.

“Social Suicide” is the industry row — ability not enough, souls traded for views. Rose: they just want punk rock and roll songs that move people. “We don’t really care what people think. It’s the way that we were raised.”
