Band comments
Paul Cook said:
“With Anarchy, I think we tapped into a feeling of unrest around the country at the time. The message was pretty simple — just have a go and get out there and do whatever you want to do. It was a new world.”
Steve Jones said:
“We’re having a blast — we’re like a well-oiled machine right now — and it’s been incredible to get out there with these songs we wrote 50 years ago. We love it. Frank’s a great frontman and really gets the crowd going. Every person in the audience loves these songs as much as we do and it’s an absolute pleasure to get out there and play them.”
50 years of punk
1976 is still treated as punk’s year zero. The Pistols’ early London shows and the June 1976 Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall gigs helped spark a wave of new bands. “Anarchy In The UK” followed that October after the EMI signing.
Cook recalled that first year as “kind of like a commando raid” — turning up, setting up and learning on the job.
Rock News final word: The extra Sex Pistols UK tour dates fill out December properly — Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool, Birmingham, Portsmouth and Bristol now sit alongside the already announced Irish and Scottish shows and the two London nights. Jones, Cook and Matlock with Frank Carter remains the current live version of this catalogue. If you want these songs loud this winter, the diary is filling fast.
