Levelling The Land 35th Anniversary Remix and Expanded Edition
Levelling The Land 35th Anniversary Remix and Expanded Edition Due 16 October
Levellers have announced a Levelling The Land 35th anniversary edition of their platinum second album, due 16 October.
The 1991 record has been remixed by original producer Al Scott from the multi-tracks. Vinyl follows the original running order. A 3CD set adds B-sides, outtakes and a full disc of demos pulled from a cassette that sat in drummer Charlie Heather’s cupboard for nearly 30 years.
“Fifteen Years (Outtake)” is out now. Pre-order: levellers.lnk.to/Levellingtheland

Why remix it
Recorded at Ridge Farm in summer 1991, Levelling The Land gave the band “One Way”, “15 Years” and “Far From Home”, plus the live staples that grew around them — “The Game”, “Liberty Song”, “The Riverflow”, “Boatman”, “Battle Of The Beanfield”.
Fiddle player Jon Sevink said early-90s mastering meant bass was pulled back so cheap TV and car speakers would not rattle. The new mix keeps the album you know and opens the low end and the stereo field.
“I called Al Scott with the idea to remix the album from the original multi-tracks so it sounds current, but — really importantly — without losing sight of the album that everyone knows and loves. He was immediately up for it and in my opinion has done the perfect job.”
The digital transfers also threw up unfinished versions. Sevink asked the band to hunt old cassettes. Heather posted a tape marked “Demos of the LP”. That is CD3.
“Forget the anniversary, it’s just a number after all,” Sevink said. “Far more important is that this definitive collection of material is finally seeing the light of day. Songs as relevant today as they were in 1991.”
Bassist Jeremy Cunningham’s sleeve stays: the two figures from A Weapon Called The Word, now dancing through a broken world — countryside on one side, towers and a benefits office on the other, a road as the way out.

Rock News final word: The Levelling The Land 35th anniversary set is the rare reissue with a reason — bass put back, demos that were actually lost, and a live run that is already a string of sold-outs. If you only ever owned the CD that sounded thin in the car, this is the version to hear.
