L.A. Guns Launch Intergalactic Heavy Metal Assault with Cover of Deep Purple’s “Space Truckin'”

L.A. Guns have dropped a massive cover of the Deep Purple classic “Space Truckin'”, offering a taste of what to expect from the upcoming star-studded tribute compilation, Purple Storm – A Tribute To Deep Purple, arriving via Cleopatra Records this November.

When bands attempt to tackle 1970s sacred cows, the results can often feel redundant. But as frontman Phil Lewis and guitar wizard Tracii Guns have repeatedly proven, this outfit operates best when putting their own sleazy, street-level stomp on hard rock history.

Putting the Sunset Strip Spin on a Classic

Clocking in just shy of five minutes, L.A. Guns wisely steer clear of trying to replicate Deep Purple’s legendary 30-minute improvised live freakouts. Instead, they lean straight into a high-octane, balls-to-the-wall attack.

Tracii Guns injects the iconic cosmic riff with a generous dose of searing, modern heavy metal grit, trading Jon Lord’s classic swirling organ dominance for pure, unadulterated fretboard fire. Meanwhile, Phil Lewis delivers the outer-space lyrics with all the sneering, high-energy swagger that made the band famous on the Sunset Strip. Backed by Adam Hamilton’s razor-sharp production, the track crackles with an urgent, live-wire tension from the first beat to the last.

This career-long ambition to honour one of their biggest formative influences sets a lofty bar for Purple Storm, which will feature an incredible roster of rock royalty including members of Megadeth, Rainbow, Journey, and Yes when it drops on November 13.
