38 Special Fire Back with Milestone: Southern Rock Titans Return After 20 Years
They’re not just holding on loosely — they’re gripping the throttle and roaring back into the spotlight. Southern rock legends 38 Special have announced their first studio album in over two decades, Milestone, dropping September 19, 2025, and with it comes a jangling, heartfelt new single, “All I Haven’t Said.” For a band that’s clocked 50 years on the road, this isn’t just a comeback — it’s a statement.

Who Are 38 Special?
Formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1974 by Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant (yes, of that Van Zant lineage), 38 Special carved out a unique niche in the Southern rock scene. While their early sound echoed the swampy swagger of Lynyrd Skynyrd, they quickly evolved into a radio-ready powerhouse, blending arena rock hooks with Southern grit. Their hits — “Hold On Loosely,” “Caught Up In You,” “Back Where You Belong,” and “Second Chance” — became staples of FM radio and MTV alike.
They weren’t just a band; they were a movement. With over 20 million albums sold, 38 Special became synonymous with high-octane live shows and a relentless touring ethic that never let up — even when the charts did.
Where Have They Been?

Though their last studio album, Drivetrain, dropped in 2004, 38 Special never truly left the stage. They’ve been touring relentlessly, hitting 100 cities a year, sharing bills with Kansas, REO Speedwagon, and Jefferson Starship. But studio silence lingered — until now.
The band’s lineup has evolved, but the spirit remains. Barnes is still at the helm, joined by longtime members Bobby Capps (keys), Gary Moffatt (drums), Barry Dunaway (bass), and Jerry Riggs (guitar). And while Donnie Van Zant stepped away in 2013 due to health issues, his legacy pulses through every riff.
The New Single: “All I Haven’t Said”
The lead single is a jangling, melodic throwback with a modern twist. Barnes calls it his “nod to the ’60s,” inspired by bands like The Searchers — but injected with power guitars and anthemic energy. Co-written with his wife Christine (who named the track after hearing the chords from the kitchen), the song is a lyrical gut-punch wrapped in shimmering guitar tones.
It’s not just nostalgic — it’s vital. “We still leave them breathless,” Barnes says. “We don’t phone it in. We don’t slack up — we stack up.”
Milestone: A Title That Says It All
Recorded in bursts between tour stops, Milestone is a labor of love and stamina. Sessions took place at Will Turpin’s (Collective Soul) studio in Atlanta, with overdubs at Jim Peterik’s home studio — yes, that Jim Peterik, co-writer of “Hold On Loosely,” “Caught Up In You,” and Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.”
The album features nine tracks, including:
- “So Much So Right”
- “Slightly Controversial” (feat. Pat Monahan of Train)
- “Long Long Train” (co-written with Randy Bachman)
- “The Look” (written by Peterik)
Mixing duties fell to Johnny K, known for his work with Disturbed and Megadeth — a fitting choice for a band that’s always balanced melody with muscle.

Southern Rock Reignited: Milestone Is More Than Just a Comeback
This isn’t nostalgia — it’s a full-blown rally cry. Milestone slams the gas pedal on Southern rock’s legacy, reminding fans that 38 Special weren’t built for retirement parties — they were built to headline them.
At a time when rock faces algorithm fatigue and auto-tuned apathy, 38 Special show you don’t need glitter to glow — just grit, soul, and the kind of hooks that leave tire marks on memory. Milestone is an anthem for lifers, for rebels, for those who still crank the dial to eleven.
Bands come and go. Legends return with purpose.
Still Rockin’ Into the Night
As Barnes puts it, “We sacrificed everything — birthdays, anniversaries, holidays. We were fiercely committed.” That commitment hasn’t wavered. With Milestone, 38 Special prove they’re not just survivors — they’re thrivers, still pushing boundaries, still chasing the perfect hook, and still bringing the party to every stage they hit.

So if you thought they were done, think again. This isn’t a victory lap — it’s a relaunch. And it sounds so much so right.
