Reviving a Classic: Star Dame’s Energetic Rendition of “Come Together”

Who are “Star Dame”?

Marija Kons (born July 17, 1991) is a rock vocalist and guitarist based in Sheffield, UK. She has an extensive background in the world of music. As a guitar teacher, songwriting coach, and event organizer, Marija has over a decade of experience performing live and recording as a vocalist and guitarist while exploring diverse genres such as rock, blues, jazz fusion, and punk.

“Come Together,” originally written by Lennon and McCartney in 1969, was the opening track on the album “Abbey Road.” The song is based on the 1956 single “You Can’t Catch Me” by American guitarist Chuck Berry. It has been covered by musicians as diverse as Ike and Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, and Aerosmith.

So how does Star Dame’s version compare with the others?

When I heard a while ago that the band was working on a version of The Beatles classic, my initial thoughts were that it was a bit risky. That’s a classic song that most people know, so I hoped they would do a good job.

Upon listening to the song, my first thoughts were that it sounds great—a nice, solid cover. They make a great wall of sound for a duo, and the track is very well produced. Kons has a good voice that suits the song—nice, wispy, and clear—reminding me of some of the 60s and 70s female vocalists such as Suzi Quatro and Joan Jett. Kons’ vocals kept me engaged.

Drums and bass are played by Burgoyne, who keeps a great rhythm. The drums sound nice and loose, and he also plays bass at the same time through a synth, producing an interesting sound that adds a modern twist to the band’s overall bluesy rock sound.

For those who like a bit of guitar in a song, this one hits the nail on the head. There are some excellent riffs throughout, nice and catchy, and a blasting solo that rivals some of the best players out there. I listened to this solo a few times over and heard different sound dynamics running through my speakers. I felt that the sounds resonated very well and kept my concentration.

The recording was produced at Jump Recording Studio in Sheffield, UK, by Dominic Farrand. He also did sound production, including pre-production and the mix. Federico Telesca mastered the track at West Homesick Studio. They did a great job helping the band achieve a nice bluesy vibe with a modern twist.

In my opinion, Star Dame’s version of “Come Together” is a great new release that goes down like a nice cold pint on a hot summer’s day. Rock music fans should support the band by listening on the 17th of May. The track will be available on all major streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. Attending their shows is also highly recommended, as they are great to see live and deserve support, especially on the strength of this release.
