Jared James Nichols Electrifies Nottingham’s Rock City with Blazing Performance

Last night marked the commencement of a brief yet highly anticipated tour, gracing the stages of Nottingham, Manchester, Wolverhampton, and culminating in London. Taking centre stage for the opener was none other than the formidable Jared James Nichols, a familiar face to British rock aficionados following his triumphant headline tour last October. Tonight, Nichols took on the role of support for the legendary Mr. Big on their farewell UK tour, showcasing his prowess as a Gibson global ambassador.
Whilst Rock News has covered many of Jared’s gigs over the last few years this was my first time witnessing the big man. Hailing from the heartland of East Troy, Wisconsin, Nichols cuts an imposing figure on stage. However, it’s not just his stature that commands attention; it’s his virtuosic command of the guitar that truly captivates.
Jared had an impromptu haircut, reportedly self-administered earlier that day. Think “Hair bear bunch,” If you’re old enough to get the reference.
From the very first chord, Nichols exudes a boundless energy that permeates the venue. What sets Jared apart is not just his technical proficiency but the sheer effortlessness with which he wields his instrument. His solos are a masterclass in precision and passion, as he unleashes a torrent of notes with a fervor that borders on the supernatural.

Accompanying him on this sonic journey are bassist Louis Collins and drummer Ryan Rice, who lock into a groove so tight it could rival the stranglehold of a python. Together, they provide the perfect canvas upon which Nichols paints his sonic tapestry, elevating each composition to dizzying heights.
But what truly sets Jared’s solos apart is his unorthodox technique. Eschewing the conventional pick, he opts instead to wield his fingers like weapons of mass destruction, hammering and pulling the strings with a ferocity that borders on madness. The result? A cacophony of sound that transcends the mere mortal realm, leaving jaws agape and ears ringing in its wake.
As the set reached its climax, Jared and his bandmates brought the house down with a scorching rendition of “Mississippi Queen,”
He leaves us with a soulful solo with some call and response with the audience.
Jared James Nichols may have been a supporting act tonight, but make no mistake: on that stage, he was nothing short of a colossus, a titan and a rock legend.
He offered us all a big sweaty hug if we wanted to meet him at the merch stand , the price of this interaction? a cold beer or shot.
