Epic Night in Charlotte: Tool and Elder Rock the Spectrum Center

On one of the coldest nights of the season, Tool and Elder warmed up a packed arena at the Spectrum Center in Uptown Charlotte, NC. Being one of the most anticipated shows of 2024, fans braved the frigid temperatures to witness one of the biggest shows of their lifetime. However, when the fans grabbed their food and drinks and found their seats, to their dismay, they were greeted with signs on the back of their seats that conveyed an extremely strict “no camera phone policy.” Talk about a huge bummer! That did not deter fans from having an awesome time.
The opening act of the night was Elder, an American four-piece rock band hailing from Massachusetts. Consisting of lead singer Nick DiSalvo, bassist Jack Donovan, guitarist/keyboardist Michael Risberg, and drummer Georg Edert, they have released six full-length albums since 2006 and multiple demos and EPs. The band hit the stage at 7:30 pm sharp, playing songs such as “Sanctuary” and “Halcyon.” Elder put on a strong performance, unfamiliar to most in the crowd. The reaction the band received was welcoming, showing that fans can appreciate great music and a band that can shine bright during their “big break.” Their sound was super crisp, and their stage presence was strong and superior. The crowd was on their feet and seen moving to the music that filled the arena.
During a short intermission, fans eagerly anticipated the headlining band, Tool. Originating from Los Angeles, California, the iconic band took to the stage at 8:30 pm sharp, giving fans the “wow factor” that has long been the band’s aura. Tool consists of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey, and bassist Justin Chancellor, the latter of whom replaced founding member Paul D’Amour in 1995. With their incorporation of visual arts and exceptionally long and complex releases, Tool stands out as a style-transcending band. They brought colorful backgrounds displayed on big screens and showcased a wide range of odd and creepy, artistic-looking creature-like figures. Opening the show with “Fear Inoculum” and playing other notable songs such as “Rosetta Stoned,” “Pneuma,” “The Grudge,” and “Chocolate Chip Trip.”
During the two-hour-long performance, fans could be seen singing along to the music. Most stood up from their seats, lost in the music. Some were so absorbed they were unaware of the amazing light show full of colorful laser lights beaming into the crowd. Many were playing air drums and air guitar, swaying as if fans were blowing around in the wind. The sights and sounds were mesmerizing, and the atmosphere was hypnotizing.
Tool closed the show with the song “Dancing Queen,” serving as a palette cleanser for what was a spectacular performance. A show that washed away all our worries and left all of us in awe. Wide eyes and smiles could be seen from fans leaving the venue. Some could be heard saying, “this was the best show I ever saw.” A solid 10 out of 10 rating for this show! If you have not seen Tool live, please add it to your bucket list. Tool and Elder continue their Winter Tour and will wrap things up on February 18th in Las Vegas, NV, at T-Mobile Arena.
