Feeder Torpedo Album Review – Feeder is back with a message of healing and aggression in equal measure. Out 18th March.

At one time, hard rock was a young person’s game. So much so you were lucky to make it past 27. These days, however, our rock stars are older, with kids of their own living the quiet-ish life in leafy suburbs – and if you’re lucky, you might see them in your local supermarket with a basket in hand.

For those not familiar with the band Feeder, they are lead singer and guitarist Grant Nicholas and bass guitarist Taka Hirose who have both exceeded and doubled their life expectancy by reaching the ripe and seasoned age of 54. You would think they’d be calming down, maybe considering an album of acoustic fare but no. Instead, Feeder is back with a message of healing and aggression in equal measure.

Torpedo is the follow-up to 2019’s Tallulah, which peaked at #4 on the Official UK Albums Chart, becoming their highest charting album since 2005’s Gold-Certified Pushing The Senses. They’ve hit upon a run of three consecutive Top 10 albums, and with this album, we find the band emerging from lockdown with the bit between their teeth.

Opener The Healing is so epic; it could be the album closer at over six minutes. Yet they start as they mean to carry on and kick off with it. Pre-pandemic, lyrics like ‘If we all come together…’ might’ve sounded a little cliched, but on this side of it, it’s good to hear. As an aside, this reviewer would’ve liked to hear a few more bars of that riff at 3.42. \m/

What follows is a tsunami of sound with songs heavy on distortion, big on choruses and riffs designed to knock you off your feet: highlights include Torpedo, Magpie and Decompress. Yet, there is still space for emotion and beauty with Born to Love You and Hide & Seek, respectively, with the latter easing off the heavy riffs favouring some lovely shoe-gazey guitars.

This is a solid collection of songs with some great riffs and choruses. There is a feeling that this album was both therapy for the band and fun to make. Lockdown affected us all in different ways, and we’re all trying to find a way back. This album will help. Not only is it fun and heavy, but it also celebrates connection and togetherness, which has been sorely missing from our lives.
