BBC Under Fire Over Bob Vylan Glasto Outburst as Criminal Investigation Launched

The BBC is facing mounting criticism over its handling of Bob Vylan’s controversial Glastonbury performance, after the grime-punk duo’s live-streamed set on Saturday included the explosive chant “Death to the IDF.” The incident, which prompted swift backlash from across the political spectrum, is now the subject of a criminal investigation led by Avon and Somerset Police.

A spokesperson for the police confirmed Monday that the incident has been recorded as a potential public order offence, with a senior detective appointed to lead the inquiry. Investigators are examining whether any hate crime legislation applies, adding that the move follows a high volume of complaints from across the UK and beyond.

But scrutiny has also zeroed in on the BBC’s decision to broadcast the set in real time, with the state broadcaster now accused of failing to act swiftly enough. Although the set has since been removed from iPlayer, officials admitted it should never have been aired in full. A BBC spokesperson said editorial teams were reviewing their live broadcast protocols following the incident.

Pressure intensified after Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy reportedly called the BBC directly, demanding answers and emphasising the need for public broadcasters to show “zero tolerance towards hate speech.” The Minister also supported the decision to investigate whether broadcasting the chant breached Ofcom standards.

Meanwhile, Bob Vylan’s talent agency, United Talent, has dropped the band from its roster in the wake of the controversy. A spokesperson for the agency confirmed the separation, declining to comment further.

The row has ignited a broader debate about platforming, censorship, and the responsibilities of broadcasters and artists during politically sensitive times — particularly at global stages like Glastonbury, known for its storied history of both activism and excess.
