The legendary thrash metal band performed at Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium, where their iconic track—used for 25 years as the Hokies football team’s entrance anthem—turned into a literal ground-shaking experience. The enthusiastic crowd’s synchronized jumping caused enough movement for Martin Chapman, director of VTSO, to detect a mini earthquake nearly one mile away from the venue.
Earthquake on the Richter Scale
The tremors registered at less than 1.0 on the Richter scale, making them too subtle to be felt but strong enough to be picked up by sensitive seismic equipment. Chapman assured that while noticeable on instrumentation, the shaking posed no risk or structural damage.
Before taking the stage, Metallica met with Hokies football coach Brent Pry, who presented them with custom jerseys. One jersey bore the number 25, celebrating the anniversary of Enter Sandman as the team’s entrance song, while the other displayed 72, representing the band’s M72 tour.
