Massive Wagons “Earth To Grace” Tour 2024 – Rock City, Nottingham, November 22nd

The opening night of Massive Wagons’ “Earth To Grace” tour at Rock City, Nottingham, was nothing short of a rock ‘n’ roll spectacle. Frontman Baz Mills declared Nottingham the perfect place to kick off the tour, and the energy in the venue proved him right. The band was on fire, delivering what can only be described as their best performance to date.

Massive Wagons

Here at Rocknews.co.uk, we have been tracking the rise of Massive Wagons for years, and it’s clear they’ve come a long way since their early days on the festival circuit in Derby. Last night, they were at the pinnacle of their game, showcasing a setlist packed with bangers from their extensive catalogue. With multiple top 5 albums to their name, the ‘Wagons’ could have easily played for another hour without running out of hits.

The stage setup was minimalist yet effective. Drummer Alex Thistlethwaite pounded away from his elevated perch, flanked by two walls of orange-cased amps adorned with a rabbit-skull-and-crossbones motif. Bassist Adam ‘Bowz’ Bouskill held down the low end in front of the speakers, while guitarists Stevie Holl and Adam Thistlethwaite traded solos with effortless synergy. The band’s camaraderie was electric, highlighted by the cheeky “Massive Wankers” sticker on Adam’s pedalboard.

Baz Mills was a force of nature, commanding the stage with his dynamic vocals and boundless energy. He made every fan feel like they were part of the show, seamlessly transitioning between songs without missing a beat. The crowd was treated to a high-octane performance that included fan favorites like “Asshole,” “Under No Illusion,” and “Sleep Forever.”

A standout moment came when the lights dimmed for the intro to “Sleep Forever.” Mills, donning a rabbit mask, crouched at the front of the stage before launching into the song with renewed vigor and fresh batteries in his pacemaker. The mid-song guitar break showcased Adam and Stevie’s impressive talents, leaving the audience in awe.

The band kept the crowd engaged with a spirited sing-off during “Asshole,” where the ladies emerged victorious. The atmosphere was electric, with fans singing, clapping, and cheering along to every song. The floor erupted with “Whoop Whoops” during “Under No Illusion,” “whoa’s” during “Changes,” and full-throated singing during the reggae-infused “No Woman No Cry” ending to “Generation Prime.”

Baz Mills’ interaction with the crowd was a highlight, especially when he ventured into the audience during “In It Together.” Despite his shorter stature, Mills’ presence was unmistakable, marked by the bouncing and dancing fans surrounding him. His journey through the crowd to a group of hardcore supporters was a memorable moment that will be cherished by those fans for years to come.

There’s also an important message being promoted on the “Earth To Grace” tour. Andy’s Man Club, the vanguard of men’s mental health, are hitting the road with Massive Wagons. Already known for their unfiltered, heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics, Massive Wagons are champions of causes that strike a chord with their dedicated followers. By bringing Andy’s Man Club on tour, they’ve turned up the volume on the message that “It’s Okay to Talk,” rallying men everywhere to break the silence around mental health. The tours not just about shredding guitars, it’s also about smashing stigmas. With thunderous riffs and real-world relevance, the band’s tracks, often born from the raw truth of mental health struggles, amplify a cause that’s all about saving lives. Rock on, and remember: it’s okay to talk.

As the night drew to a close, Mills took to an inflatable dinghy, surfing the crowd with hilarious commentary and shouts of mock panic. As he sailed around he had a pole with a T’shirt attached, teasing the crowd by placing it. just out of reach of their fingertips. And then, and in Baz’s words, “Some Cheeky Bastards” grabbed it. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time and being tall enough to reach it. Thanks Wagons for the T-Shirt its another one for the collection.

The three song encore featured “Free And Easy,” “Ratio,” and the anthemic “House of Noise,” capping off an unforgettable night of rock.

As the house lights raised, Mills stood on the stage risers, thanking the crowd for their support over the past 15 years. The band’s success is a testament to their hard work, relentless touring, and knack for writing anthemic tunes that resonate with fans. As the gig wrapped up, the speakers blared “YMCA,” keeping the crowd in high spirits as the Wagons posed for photos.

If you can get a ticket for one of the Massive Wagons shows, I highly recommend you do. If you have a ticket already, I guarentee you are in for a fantastic night. 10/10 guys and possibly the best gig of the year.
