Can’t-Miss Bands of the Year: My Rock News’ Top Live and Streaming Picks

As the year draws to a close, it’s time to spotlight some of the most memorable bands I’ve encountered through my work with Rock News. Each of these acts offers something unique, bringing fresh energy and excitement to the music scene. Here are my top picks of the year:

Barns Courtney

Their sound on Spotify was solid, but nothing prepared me for the impact of Barns Courtney live. Seeing them on stage is an experience like no other—it’s as if you’re stepping into an 80s hair metal revival, with all the raw energy and electrifying stage presence to match. Yet, this isn’t your typical modern rock; Barns Courtney brings a unique twist, capturing the essence of a classic rock performance with a fresh edge.

Barns himself is a powerhouse, diving into the crowd and making every single person feel like part of the show. It’s impossible not to be swept up in the energy, and it’s this intense, inclusive experience that makes their live performance unforgettable.

After seeing them live, I was hooked. Their back catalog quickly became my go-to, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they top my Spotify Wrapped list this year. If you get the chance, don’t just stream them—see them live.

The Southern River Band

Another incredible discovery this year was The Southern River Band, a hard-hitting rock group from Perth, Western Australia. I stumbled upon their music on YouTube, and their video pulled me in with high-energy strobe visuals and an irresistible riff. This is Australian rock at its finest: unapologetic, intense, and utterly captivating. Their sound embodies the spirit of rock with a touch of grit and authenticity that keeps you coming back for more.

Their catalog is packed with solid tracks, each one bolder than the last. If you’re a rock fan, The Southern River Band should be on your radar.

Eddie 9V

Last but certainly not least is Eddie 9V, a standout in the blues rock scene. From the first single his PR team sent over, I was hooked. For many of us rock fans, blues is a genre close to our hearts, and Eddie brings it back with authenticity and soul. Right now, he’s still playing support slots, but it’s only a matter of time before he’s headlining in his own right.

One of the best parts of following Eddie’s journey is watching his evolution on YouTube. From his early days as a kid explaining classic blues riffs to his school band, his talent has always been undeniable. I haven’t yet had the chance to catch him live, but from all reports, he puts on a fantastic show. Thankfully, that’ll change in December when I’ll be covering his UK tour stop in Nottingham.

These artists have made a lasting impression, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for each of them. For now, they’ve made it into my top picks of the year. If you’re a fan of authentic rock and blues, give these bands a listen—and, if possible, catch them live. Here’s to more incredible music discoveries in the year ahead!
