From Prog Indie to Space Punk: A Bizarre Friday Night with Walt’s Frozen Head and Evil Blizzard

Friday night in Huddersfield. Normally it’s beers in Wetherspoons then a dodgy kebab before you get your taxi or bus home…

Until… Walt’s Frozen Head and Evil Blizzard hit the Parish…

Walt’s head comes on stage carried by a guy in a white doctors coat wearing a crocodile mask… having seen Evil Blizzard many times before we’re used to weird masks but a bodiless head with glowing red eyes that talks. And is Walt Disney (from the myth that Walt Disney requested that his head be frozen,to then be brought back to life in the future). This is going to be interesting!

I’ve met guitarist/front man Al before at gigs but this is the first time I’ve seen him on stage. Cue a fantastic prog indie set, sprinkled with 70s Beatles/Cardiacs/Bowie/early Floyd vibes, with a projector backdrop of fantastic graphics and video. If you get the chance to catch Walt’s Frozen Head please do – they’re supporting Embrace for 2 nights on their upcoming November tour 👍🏻 or listen here –

Headline is Evil Blizzard who are stalwarts of the space rock/punk scene and have had prime slots at festivals such as Blackpool’s annual Rebellion festival. The Preston-based 6-piece started life as 4 bass players with a singing drummer back in’t day but Filthy Dirty starts off quite dapper-dressed with a <shock> normal 6-string guitar! Consisting of newest member bassist Fleshcrawl of Hawkwind fame the rest of the band are Side (vocals/drums), Stomper (bass), Blizz Pig (a pig playing keyboards!) and Prowler (menacing bass).

The traditional booing as the band take to the stage has ceased as this light-hearted ribbing is so passe! However the crowd are no less enthusiastic, with a wide mix of ages, metal/punk/prog band tshirts, Mohican hair or bald pates, the crowd are bouncing and moshing to old favourites such as Are You Evil, Stupid People and Slimy Creatures along with newer songs like Rotting In The Belly Of The Whale this isn’t maybe for the faint-hearted! If you want a party atmosphere though with more than a sprinkling of weirdness, these two bands should definitely be on your list! Evil Blizzard are next up on the 27th September headlining the Bootleg Social in Blackpool 🤘🏻 https://bootlegsocial.co.uk/events/

Oh and we got a Maccy Ds instead of the dodgy kebab!! 😄
