From Funk to Metal: Living Colour’s Dazzling Night at Rock City

Nottingham’s iconic Rock City was ablaze with energy last night as Living Colour delivered a performance that will be etched in the memories of fans for years to come. The legendary band, known for their unique fusion of funk, rock, and metal, took the stage with a setlist that was as vibrant as their outfits and the venue’s dazzling lights.

The night kicked off with a bang as the band launched into “Leave It Alone,” seamlessly transitioning into “Middle Man.” The crowd erupted with excitement, especially during “Bi.,” where the venue’s rainbow-colored lights illuminated the darkness, creating a mesmerising atmosphere.

Living Colour’s musicianship was on full display, with each song showcasing their incredible talent and energy. Highlights of the night included the powerful “Ignorance is Bliss” and the politically charged “Open Letter (to a Landlord),” which resonated deeply with the audience. Corey Glover’s gospel-esque notes at the end of the song were a particular crowd-pleaser.

A standout moment of the evening was Will Calhoun’s drum solo, which captivated everyone in the room with his extraordinary skills. The band also paid homage to their influences with a high-octane cover of MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams,” followed by a medley of “White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It),” “Apache,” and “The Message,” which had the audience dancing and singing along.

Between songs, lead singer Corey Glover’s humorous interactions with the crowd and his bandmates added a personal touch to the performance. His encouragement of sing-alongs seamlessly led into the next songs, creating a feeling of celebration and camaraderie.

Nostalgia filled the air for “Rock News” as the band performed “Glamour Boys,” transporting us back to when the DJ used to play the song on a Friday night in the Rock City night club, where we drunkenly danced as the song played tribute to the days of big hair and flamboyant styles.

The night reached its zenith with the anthemic “Cult of Personality,” a song that never fails to ignite the crowd. For the finale, Living Colour surprised everyone with a spirited rendition of The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” leaving the audience craving more.
