Muphoria Unveiled: London’s Premier Music Art Gallery Grand Opening

Muphoria: Feelings of euphoria experienced by music alone, so reads the definition on urbandictionary.com.

Muphoria is also the name of a brand new gallery for musical instruments and fine art, and London’s first permanent exhibition space dedicated to ‘music art’.

We were lucky enough to be invited to the launch event ahead of the public opening on 1st December.

A glass of champagne awaited us as we entered the long white room where a DJ was playing 7” singles and the London art and music scene mingled while admiring the works on display and chatting to the artists in attendance.

Located in the heart of Soho, the space includes photographs, paintings, sculpture and other art from both renowned and emerging artists and celebrates a wide spectrum of music through some striking and original pieces.

Collages of Grace Jones and the Prodigy’s Keith Flint sat next to album art from Michael Spencer Jones (The cover of Oasis’ ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory’ was shot on Berwick Street) and some interesting knitted portraits of the likes of Yoko Ono.

Illuminati Neon’s hand-blown neon art dominates the large space at the back of the gallery, and we particularly liked his Ramones, Clash and Sex Pistols inspired pieces.

There were also guitars, painted by New York artists and made from sustainable materials on show from Maybury Guitars, and a range of canvasses, painted in acrylics by Martin Grover, depicting realistic looking 7” singles in their paper sleeves.

The two highlights for us were the striking, oversized pin badges (the sort you used to wear on your denim jacket) of bands such as Talking Heads, Killing Joke, Television, The Cure, X-Ray Spex and PiL by British contemporary artist Tony Dennis (aka Tape Deck Art), and the incredible black and white film photographs of David Corio, whose shots of Bob Marley, Whitney Houston, Johnny Ramone and John Lydon were on display.

Tom Lawes, founder and managing director of Muphoria, said in their press release: “Muphoria aims to bridge the gap between the music and art world – not just by selling music-themed art but by inviting musicians and artists to collaborate on new work and new musical instruments.”

We can’t wait to see what the gallery has in store in the coming months!

Muphoria: where music and fine art collide is open to the public from 1st December and admission is free.

  • An incredible , full of great vibe and art pieces. I just tried a guitar amplifier, very similar to a Marshall JTM. Please let me know the name of the brand. It sounded absolutely increíble, with a tele style guitar with P90’s. I need to know more about that amp brand.

    Thank you
