From Plastic Sea Gulls to Raw Energy: Dumb Buoys Fishing Club’s Debut Album Unleashed.
What a fantastic venue the Lower Third is. Occupying the space that was, until 2015, the legendary 12-Bar Club on London’s iconic Denmark Street.
Considering the guitar stores that Denmark Street is most famous for, it’s odd that tonight’s act don’t use guitars, or indeed any other instrument.
Dumb Buoys Fishing Club are made up of producers Dan D’Lion and Havelock, and were here tonight to showcase their debut album ‘Wrecked’.
The basement of 29 Denmark Street was decked out with plastic sea gulls, nets and other fishing-related items, which was a nice touch, and there were plenty of people in the audience to welcome the duo, who took to the stage alongside a videographer and accompanied by a DJ who provided the beats and backing tracks – both of whom were wearing green balaclavas. D’Lion and Havelock share the vocal duties and alternate between rapping and singing. They work well together, and the set was polished but retained the energy and rawness of a live performance. They prowled the stage and interacted brilliantly with the bouncing crowd.
We were treated to the majority of the ‘Wrecked’ album, from opener ‘Life Jacket’ to ‘Skeleton Town’, which closed the 15-song set.
They also performed tracks including ‘Pull Up’, ‘Fisherman’s Friend’ and ‘Mermaid’ which aren’t on the album but which, like the rest of the set, delivered with an intensity and energy that was infectious.
D’Lion and Havelock wear their influences on their sleeves. There are nods to Gorillaz, The Beastie Boys and naughties Hip-Hop, but their sound is unmistakably their own and we think they’re one of the most exciting acts on the circuit.
