NOBRO’s ‘Set Your Pussy Free’: A Punk Revolution Worth Celebrating – Album review.

NOBRO

I’ve been a fan of this band for several years now, and their growth and evolution continue to amaze me. My introduction to them was thanks to a recommendation from Ginger Wildheart on Twitter. Recently, the Montreal-based punk sensation NOBRO made their triumphant return with their second full-length album, “Set Your Pussy Free,” following the release of their debut album in 2022, “Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar,” and a couple of recent singles, “Let’s Do Drugs” and “Where My Girls At.” “Set Your Pussy Free” serves as an explosively exhilarating follow-up to their already impressive debut.

The album kicks off with a bang, as NOBRO opens with a wave of distortion on the title track, setting a tone of liberation and action. This catchy and energetic track, which reaches a climactic point during the build-up leading to a blistering guitar solo, lives up to its role as the title track. The lead single, “Let’s Do Drugs,” follows with its gritty sound led by powerful chugging power chords, accompanied by a recurring gang vocal motif.

Over the course of its eleven tracks, NOBRO delivers an album devoid of any weak moments. Each song could easily stand on its own as a single, but there are certain highlights that shine even brighter. “Cash In On My Cachet” exudes a laid-back and rhythmic vibe, while “Nobody Knows” immerses you in a fuzzed-out psychedelia that’s simply fantastic. The slightly darker tone of “Who The Hell Am I” draws parallels to The Stooges while showcasing NOBRO’s ability to inject fresh and innovative elements into classic punk. Undoubtedly, NOBRO knows how to keep the good times rolling.

With the longest track clocking in at a mere three minutes and twenty seconds, NOBRO adheres to the punk tradition of leaving you yearning for more. “Set Your Pussy Free” may leave you wishing for an extended playtime, but it offers a refreshing take on modern and alternative punk. Prioritizing an irresistibly fun atmosphere, NOBRO captures the nihilistic and existential essence that feels intertwined with millennial culture in today’s chaotic world. The songwriting and lyrics on “Set Your Pussy Free” feel remarkably relevant to our times. Coupled with music that defies expectations in both the punk and alternative rock realms, NOBRO solidifies their position as one of the most promising and up-and-coming punk bands with their sophomore release, “Set Your Pussy Free.”

I’m looking forward to the possibility of them gracing the UK with their presence for some live performances in 2024.
