K.Flay Rocks Electric Brixton: An Amazing Night of Music with support from Weathers

We do like Electric Brixton. The intimate venue that was the Fridge in a previous life was the perfect place to host 2 exciting bands this evening.

Weathers

The hall was bathed in blue light as the audience poured in to the stalls, and the place was full and buzzing by the time opening act Weathers took to the stage. You could be forgiven for thinking that this was a double-headline evening from the welcome the Los Angeles foursome received. They took this energy and ramped it up as lead vocalist Cameron Boyer gyrated around the stage and worked the audience brilliantly.

The whole band – guitarist Cameron Olsen and bassist Brennan Bates were held down by some ferocious drumming from Christian Champion and exuded energy from the moment they started opening song ‘She Hates Me’ until they walked off stage after 2020’s single ‘C’est La Vie’.

The Brixton crowd were treated to highlights from the bands back catalogue of radio-friendly pop-punk-with-a-twist, from 2015’s ‘Happy Pills’ to latest single ‘One of a Kind’. Weathers’ wear their influences on their sleeve and we could hear everyone from the Killers to My Chemical Romance in their sound. But they make their own musical statements with lyrics that are inward-looking and speak to their audience.

We thoroughly enjoyed their half-hour set. With killer bass lines, catchy riffs, clever use of synth backing tracks and a frontman to rival Jagger in energy alone, what’s not to love?

Weathers head back to the USA for a November tour, but we’re looking forward to seeing them back here soon.

K.Flay

Kristine Meredith Flaherty, better known as Grammy-nominated K.Flay, has been thrilling audiences for almost two decades and tonight her fan base was out in force. The crowd were a great mix of ages and we spotted punks, metal heads and everyone in-between, showing the broad appeal she has.

Her band, consisting of drummer Janis Hinz and guitarist / bassist Alex Foote were on fire and the set list showcased her career, spanning earlier rap-infused songs and more recent rock-flavoured releases.

There were a total of nine songs from her latest album, MONO, including singles ‘Raw Raw, ‘Irish Goodbye’ and ‘Punisher’. These tracks, full of energy and attitude, clearly meant the world to her – more so as she recently became deaf in one ear (hence the album title) and there was a period where her career was in doubt.

K.Flay knows how to work a crowd, and her energy as she prowled the stage, rolled on the floor and danced was infectious.

The band, with K.Flay adding extra guitar in places made an incredible noise and we wondered at times just how they managed to create such a sound with just three instruments.

This was a long set of 21 songs, including a superb cover of X Ambassadors’ ‘Zen’.

We left Electric feeling elated. She is a fantastic performer whose songs have real depth and a truly unique sound.

K.Flay tours Canada in November and the USA in March 2024. If you’re in the area we strongly recommend you catch her.

Samantha Fish announces new album with Jesse Dayton ahead of October UK Tour.
