Gwyn Ashton’s 10th album, celebrating a 50-year career is drenched in slide guitar and personal stories, and could have easily come out of the Mississippi swamps, as opposed to the UK via Australia and France.

The South Australian Music Hall of Fame inductee has toured in over 30 countries throughout his long career, and these experiences are drawn upon in the lyrics of many of the tracks on “Mojosoul”.

Ashton has kept the instrumentation simple and effective – National steel and 12 string acoustic guitars dominate, accompanied by his own foot-percussion. It gives the whole album an authentic feel and a coherence that means the songs hang together as a whole. Having said that, the 10 tracks on the album do span a range of styles and moods.

Opener By Your Side – full of sleazy licks – is reminiscent of Johnny Cash’s Gods Gonna Cut you down, it’s clever musical tools like the slide guitar following the vocal melody is simple but so effective. By the time we get to Yesterday’s Me we’re in to Country territory. “This is the story of my life” announces Ashton as the personal, autobiographical “Ballad of Gwyn Ashton” opens. The song goes on to document his life in music, set to a catchy melody and some great guitar playing.

Closing track “The Perfect Day To Sing The Blues” is more melancholy and reflective, and a perfect closer to a deeply personal album full of well-crafted songs.

“Mojosoul” is an album that will appeal to fans of blues and rock alike. With its powerful vocals, impressive guitar work, and well-crafted songs, it’s a testament to Ashton’s talents as a musician and songwriter.
