Dynamic Blues Force Samantha Fish and Country Outlaw Jesse Dayton Reveal the Fierce New Track “Riders” from Their Upcoming Album Death Wish Blues
Samantha Fish, one of the most dynamic blues forces in the world today, and Jesse Dayton, an exceptional solo recording artist, have collaborated to create an album of songs that blend blues, soul, punk, funk, and good old rock-and-roll. Their upcoming album, Death Wish Blues, is set to be released on May 19th, 2023, on Rounder Records. The album’s lead single, “Riders,” features Fish and Dayton interchanging commanding vocals while building a ferociously groove-heavy rhythm.
The Making of Death Wish Blues
According to Fish, the making of Death Wish Blues marked the culmination of a musical connection forged in her hometown of Kansas City over a decade ago. Dayton is a Beaumont, Texas-bred musician with whom Fish had been wanting to do a collaborative project for a while. They came together to create an album that was initially meant to be an alt-blues record but turned out to be so much more exciting and layered than they ever imagined.
The album was produced by the legendary Jon Spencer of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Death Wish Blues ultimately melds Fish and Dayton’s eclectic sensibilities into a batch of songs that are both emotionally potent and wildly combustible.
Riders
“Riders” is a powerful track that describes being musicians and troubadours and having one-night stands with whatever city you happen to be in. Every city is personified as a love interest or partner, and in the end, you just move on to whatever adventure is coming up next. Fish and Dayton are seen down the road in the gritty “Riders” video, which can be found on their website.
The Album
Fish and Dayton are gearing up for a round of tour dates to support Death Wish Blues. A full list of tour dates is available on their website.
Garden & Gun recently featured Fish in their “New Guitar Greats” roundup, alongside Marcus King, Billy Strings, and other top players. Garden & Gun writer Jim Beaugez noted that on Faster, Fish’s 2021 Rounder Records release, she worked with producer Martin Kierszenbaum (Lady Gaga) to create a set of spunky, pop-focused cuts, and her latest—Death Wish Blues—channels those same impulses through a fuzz box with the grit set to eleven.
Death Wish Blues showcases the raw power of Fish and Dayton’s guitar playing, both with foundations grounded in blues music. And aided by Jon Spencer’s production, they push the limits by seamlessly merging their strengths into an album of songs with both swagger and bravado, as well as emotion and sensitivity.
