Airbourne (Second Stage) Friday
Straight in from playing shows in Europe ‘Airbourne’ take to the second stage with a set list containing songs from their entire back catalogue of Albums which is not a bad achievement based on the reduce performance time afforded by the ‘Download’ organisers. ‘Airborne’ formed back in 2001 and I have seen them several times over the years.
The Australian rockers are all about the performance with frontman ‘Joel O’Keeffe’ is known at shows to open cans of beer with his forehead by head butting them until they exploded as an entertaining interlude. In fact back in 2010 in true Rock’n’ Roll style I witnessed Joel halfway through a soaking wet Download set climb the scaffold tower at the side of the stage in the pouring rain.
There he was 50 feet in the air performing a guitar solo to the crowds amazement until the ‘elf & safety team stepped in and decided to pull the plug cutting power to the stage. They then demanded Joel climb down before reinstating the power allowing the show to continue. This time Joel kept throwing pints of beer into the audience, and after just a few songs Joel was out in the audience. Whilst the onstage antics tonight weren’t quite so outrageous I was pleased to see the ‘Airbourne’ boys still know how to put on a great ‘Download’ show full of thumping raw Australian rock music.
