Frank Turner gig review - Metronome Nottingham.

Tonight I’m at Metronome in Nottingham to see Frank Turner. A show that was supposed to happen in March but was rearranged as Frank was unwell, so it’s tonight. In the middle of a week when he is supporting My Chemical Romance in stadium gigs Frank is performing in front of a crowd of 300. I feel honoured to be part of the crowd.

Metronome is a cross-media center in Nottingham. It boasts not only the auditorium but also gallery spaces, recording studios, and rehearsal spaces. A gem of a venue. Frank is performing two shows tonight and there is no support. I’m here for the second show. It’s totally acoustic and Frank is joined on stage by Matt Nasir.

The first song is The Gathering and I can’t think of a better song to start with, a track about the longing for the return of live music. “The first time that the beat drops in the bar, it’s gonna be biblical. The second that the sing-along starts, it’ll be sensational” and the crowd loves it. Frank chatted to us between songs and as he changed guitars, talking about the number 1 album FTHC, working with KT Tunstall on a re-recording of Little Life, and getting back to gigging.

Frank gets everyone to join in at the end of The Resurrectionists, the part requires 3 voices and as Frank points out, there are only 2 of them on stage so will we sing the other? Of course, we will.

The pace slowed a little as Frank talked to us about his moving tribute to his late friend Scott Hutchison and how he wrote A Wave Across A Bay about him. The room was silent. It was just Frank and his guitar. It was beautiful and moving. Then it was onto punches, which restarted the singalong.

The final song of the night was, of course, I Still Believe. It was a fantastic night, in a great little venue. Frank Turner is returning to Nottingham Rock City on 27th September this time with his full band.
