Wayward Sons Rescue Rooms gig review. Rock doesn’t get any better than this.

Wayward Sons Rescue Rooms gig review. Tonight’s venue is Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms, Rock City’s younger brother. It’s half the size of Rock City but has all the atmosphere. Tonight we are here to see Wayward Sons. This is 4th time we have seen them but it’s the first one we have seen them headlining, the others have been festivals for support slots.

First up we have an almost local band SKAM, a three-piece no-nonsense hard rock band from Leicester. They have been going for about 10 years now but have got to the point when they have truly nailed it. The highlight of this band has to be ‘The Bass With The Face’ – Matt Gilmor, you’ve all seen a guitar face well Matt’s bass face is something to behold. All the guys give their performance 100% but Matt literally never lets off the power. The guys made sure the audience got some vocal chord practice for the soon to be performing Wayward Sons with their cover of Black Sabbath’s ‘War Pigs’. From where I was stood it sounded like the whole audience was singing along.

SKAM are one of the best new Rock bands doing the rounds and if you haven’t already done so I would definitely recommend you get out there and see these guys live.

8.30pm saw headliners Wayward Sons hit the stage in Rescue Rooms. I have said it many times but it is still true, this band gets better every time you see them. For me Wayward Sons rate as one of the best new bands currently on the rock scene, you’ve got Toby Jepson, Nic Watell and Phil Martini who have been doing this for years in various bands and then you throw in Sam Wood on guitar who Toby rightly describes as a man who is becoming a guitarist of his generation

It not been long but we already have 3 great albums by this band. They kicked off the set with ‘Any Other Way’ which can now be described as a classic that would sit equally well as an encore song. The sound they create smacks you in the face and takes no prisoners. Toby talked about his frustration as covid as with all bands stopped touring. The positives from this time were they got to make a brilliant lock down album.

They played 18 songs and ended with Feel Good Hit, Until the End and Big Day. What other band do you know that can play a new song as an encore and everyone loves it, this is a testament to the amazing song writing skills of Mr Jepson.

Obviously you know I am going to recommend you go and see this band, they still have some dates left on this tour but if you can’t make them make sure you catch them opening the main stage at Download on the Friday. Make sure you pick up a T-shirt they are priced very reasonable and have the incredible art work from the new album.
