Gig reviewsSteve N Seagulls

Steve N Seagulls Gig review – Bodega Nottingham.

Todays venue is ‘The Bodega’ on Nottingham’s Pelham Street. It is one of the city’s smaller venues located in the popular Hockley area of Nottingham . It’s a familiar place to me and over the years I have attended many gigs  here. The performance area is located upstairs with a bar and has a compact stage area. The venue creates a good atmosphere with only a small crowd and being a smaller venue you are never far from the band.

Opening at the Bodega tonight are Steve Bonham & The Long Road. Steve an accomplished musician with over 10 albums to his name performed lead vocals, guitar and mouth organ. Steve was joined by Christopher Lydon on keyboard & drum to perform a short set of American inspired folk music which the band refer to as ‘Moonshine Music’ on their website.

Next up was Stuart Landon a popular local artist from Nottingham. Stuart along with Bass guitarist, Neil Cook, performed ’Cocaine’, ‘How Long The Wait’ and ‘PS I Love You’. There was support in the crowd in the form of Stuarts family. His brothers joined the band on stage to perform an excellent cover of ‘Seven Bridges Road’, which you can see on our Rock News YouTube channel.

Headlining tonight and coming all the way from Finland are Remmel, Skubu, Jamppa, Hiltunen & Herman who make up the band Steve ’n’ Seagulls. The band have been around for ten years now and have released 4 albums to date. Their speciality is covering classic rock performances using the unique sound of Bluegrass / Rockabilly / Rock. Without a doubt their biggest success to date is their cover of AC/DC’s Thunderstruck that got them a whopping 130 million views on YouTube.

The Bodega is Steve ’n’ Seagulls 6th stop in their 9 gig ‘Lion Tamer’ UK tour which commenced  at the Thekla Bristol and will end on the 1st of October at The Garage London. This is the first time they have been back in the country since December 2018. The gig tonight is a replacement for Dublin which was cancelled due to local COVID restrictions. The band appeared on stage and opened with their version of ‘Master of Puppets’ by Metalica. Steve ’n’ Seagulls are a band that invokes energy into the crowd with their up-tempo beat and traditional style instruments. Its not every day you entertained by accordions, banjos and violins sounding out hits from the likes of ACDC, Iron Maiden and ZZ Top. The songs kept playing and the instruments kept changing. Jamppa taking up most of the stage with his double bass, whilst Hiltunen playing the tiniest flute and speed banjo playing Herman barely had room to move. Credit to anyone who got to see Skubu on the drums behind this wall of finish men and instruments.

One of the highlights of the night has to be their version of Iron Maiden’s Aces High being introduced as a song by that well known British composer of accordion music Mr Stephen Percy Harris. The end of the set came round too quickly and the band finished with their versions of ‘You Shock Me All Night Long’ & ‘Thunder Struck’

Unfortunately we were robbed of an encore which maybe was down to the amount of strings that snapped on Remmels instruments as he performed. It didn’t effect the show and judging by the crowds enjoyment, Steve ’n’ Segulls were on form tonight and hopefully it won’t be long before we see them again back here in Nottingham.
