Back in 2019 before the world stopped they were playing the main stage at Reading / Leeds, supporting Foo Fighters on tour through the US, and were invited by The Cure’s Robert Smith to play his own curated Meltdown Festival in London. News of their new album “Into The Blue” (Aug 20, Hassle Records) has received a great response, with support from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NME, DIY, Dork, Upset, BBC 6 Music, Radio 1, The Line of Best Fit, The Independent and much more.
For The Joy Formidable, their music has become a way to block out the noise from the world itself and process their circumstance through a noise all of their own. “Into The Blue” is as personal as the band have ever been on record, with a darkness and trauma that they don’t sidestep, and to play it through from start to finish feels like wandering along a path that littered with acts of defiance. In their own words it is about “making it to the other side.”
Songs here carry powerful messages of growth and acceptance. First single “Back To Nothing” takes a stance on self-compassion, realizing your worth and your boundaries. Title track “Into The Blue” is about having the courage to enjoy a new journey and the mystery and excitement of something unexpected. “Sevier” – named after the River Sevier, which runs through Utah, where the band live – takes the journey metaphor to a wild conclusion: will you dutifully follow its course, or burst the banks. Elsewhere “Chimes” is the band giving into total trust, and the admirably blunt “Gotta Feed My Dog” is essentially lead singer Ritzy Bryan saying she would rather spend time with her dog than in a negative relationship.
“Into The Blue” has come to symbolize a period for them in which anything felt possible – good and bad. It’s the sound of the band at their resilient, self-assured best, drawing strength in turning feelings of being unaccepted and misunderstood into self-love and connection. This is them re-emerging happier, eager to embrace the new and unknowable.
